The charming Village of Waunakee, Wisconsin, (WAWN' - a - kee), part of Dane County, began life in 1870, with the building of the first house in town on Second Street. Then called Leicester (or, Lester), the first business place in the community was a general store built on Main Street by Mr. Fred Bublman in the summer of 1871. The origin of the name is uncertain - other than that it is borrowed from a local Native American language. One tradition says that Waunakee was the name of an Indian who camped near the new settlement; another says it is an Indian term variously translated as "you win," "sharpshooter," "he lives in peace," "the fair and pleasant valley," and several other unrelated phrases

In any case, the present-day Village of Waunakee was formally incorprated in 1893. The Chicago and Northwestern Railroad was extending its line to ST Paul at the time and officials of the railroad wished to locate a station in the area. A spot near the mill (locaated at Woodland Dr. / Bong Road intersection of Six Mile Creek) had been chosen for its prime location - just two miles from the center of the growing village. But two early settlers, Lewis Baker and George Fish, owned land along the new railroad line and plotted a village on their property instead. In exchange for $1,500 and two miles of right of way, railroad officials changed their original plans - and today trains roar to a stop in what is now known as Waunakee.

Today, the Waunakee Village Center offers a wide range of facilities and programs for the whole family. The senior center includes nutrition, lounge and wellness areas. The balance of the facility includes class rooms, arts and crafts space, multi-use gymnasium, walking track, exercise equipment area and community meeting rooms suitable for classes, organization meetings, and dining for family events such as holidays and birthday parties.
